San Antonio Little Theater

San Antonio Little Theater (SALT) was founded in 1912, as the San Antonio Dramatist Club by Sarah Barton Bindley. Ms. Bindley’s enthusiasm for encouraging community drama successfully garnered the support of various civic and social organizations, and a vision emerged to formalize a theater group with a sound operating budget, a large supporting membership, and a playhouse of its own. On April 6, 1927 a corporate charter was filed with the State of Texas and San Antonio Little Theater was formally established.  To this date, SALT remains the organization’s legal name.

San Pedro Playhouse

In 1997, the San Antonio Little Theater re-branded as the San Pedro Playhouse. Since the physical theater of the San Pedro Playhouse was a familiar name within many households, re-branding the theater company which occupied the facility with the same name would bring greater community awareness to the organization. As SALT was approaching the new millennium, leadership wanted to bring a renewed energy into the performing arts and local theater scene.

The Playhouse San Antonio

In 2012, as the City experienced exponential growth, SALT wanted to increase visibility of its brand. The synonymous name of The San Pedro Playhouse for the facility and the theater company did not materialize into greater community awareness as originally hoped. Individuals thought of the theater as an icon of yesteryear and not a current cultural asset. In order to instill a vision of a progressive community-minded theater that embraced the future while returning the theater to the artists, SALT re-branding as The Playhouse San Antonio.

The Public Theater of San Antonio

San Antonio Little Theater has always been the innovator for the theatrical arts of our region.  With over a century of history, we can claim several firsts for our community. In July 2017, acting as a catalyst of growth for the local performing arts, the organization entered into an agreement with the Actors Equity Association to transition into San Antonio’s first Small Professional Theater. High quality production values and increasing access initiatives sparked a new vision statement- Theater For All.  In January 2018, to prove its commitment to the citizens of San Antonio and to better align itself with the objectives and mission of the city, SALT became The Public Theater of San Antonio.
