Public Prep is committed to developing the talents and ambitions of the youth of San Antonio through extensive training in all aspects of theater, dance, and voice by local professionals and guest artists from around the country.
The Public Theater is now offering young artists a sequentially based theater education that grows with them as they grow. Students who continue with this program will move up in levels throughout the years in foundational courses such as Acting, Dance, Voice, and Technical Theater. As students progress, more training subjects will become available to them. These elective classes will include, but not be limited to, directing, playwriting, and specialized dance courses. All courses will be led by instructors with immense training and who are professionals in their field.
During the first year of the program, one discipline will be offered for each age group per quarter. Throughout the 2020/2021 season, we will rotate disciplines so that each age group will have a chance to train in all 4 core foundational courses by the end of the year. This program will grow to provide more class availability and levels for all ages in the 2021/2022 season.
Acting - The acting portion of our program will guide students in developing foundational skills in creative expression, inquiry and understanding, and performance. This course will cover necessary skills such as developing characterization, sensory and memory recall, body and spatial awareness, emotional response, theatrical vocabulary, healthy vocal practices, script analysis, and scene work.
Voice - This class is designed to improve each student’s singing voice and develop the ability to sing successfully in front of others. During the course of study, students will be taught the fundamentals of healthy vocal production, including proper posture and breath support, tone production, diction, and expression, all while gaining confidence in their singing ability. Students will be singing together and individually for this class.
Dance - Dance will combine fundamentals and history in both jazz and ballet. Through dance, students will learn proper warm-ups and cool-downs, technique, physical improvisation, body awareness, and combinations. As students grow through the program, classes will expand to include tap, hip hop, jazz, and ballet.
Technical Theater - Technical Theater encompasses all of the aspects of offstage work that are included in the profession of theater. Through this class students will have the opportunity to learn about safety and communication, proper use of tools, set, lighting, and sound design, prop making, basic sewing and costume construction, and stage makeup.
