The Public Theater of San Antonio, in collaboration with the Arts Fund, is pleased to accept applications for a full-time, 10-week paid Summer Internship beginning June 1, 2020 through August 7, 2020. The purpose of this opportunity is to provide an
undergraduate student the opportunity for meaningful job training and experience working with a not-for-profit arts organization and to foster future leaders and advocates for the arts in Bexar County. The selected intern will work 40 hours per week in various
technical capacities under the supervision of the Technical Director.
Description of Internship Projects/Assignments:
Under the direction of the Technical Director, the selected intern will have a ‘hands on’ and ‘behind the scenes’ experience supporting the conceptual and physical set design, lighting and sound production to stage a live theater production. The intern will gain professional skills and experience working on the sets for ‘Into the Woods’, ‘Fade’ and Something Rotten’.
The intern will assist the Technical Director in ensuring all technical aspects of the production work smoothly and safely. The intern will learn the skills necessary to ensure the production activities are completed in a timely and efficient manner. The intern will gain experience in several production disciplines including carpentry, electrics and lighting, paint, props, scenery, and sound with participation in the preparation and execution of that department's work in the shops and on stage.
The intern will serve as an additional valuable crew member that is responsible for the overall quality of a stage production that will provide an exciting and entertaining experience for theater patrons. The Public retains limited paid technical staff and the assistance of an intern will contribute to adherence of production timelines and budgets.
The selected applicant must be a current Bexar County resident. Student may be attending a school outside of Bexar County but their permanent address must be located in Bexar County. Pursuing an undergraduate degree in a discipline within the fine arts with a concentration in theater.
Construct and paint scenic units for multiple productions.
Craft special units based on designs and needs of productions.
Attend production meetings to learn the technical journey of a show.
Assist with maintenance of facilities and shop.
Assist the Technical Director, Resident Designer, Sound Designer, and Lighting Designer with
additional technical tasks.
Intern must be available June 2 or 9 and August 3-7 to attend mandatory events per the Bexar County Arts Intern Program.
Intern schedule is flexible and intern must be available some evenings and weekends.
Basic carpentry skills.
Experience with power tools and hand tools.
Ability to lift and carry over 50 lbs consistently.
Ability to climb, stoop, and squat.
Working knowledge of plumbing and mechanical systems.
Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems.
Experience with Theatrical Rigging (PLASA Standards).
Experience welding or other metal fabrication.
